Course Description

This course focuses on the history of the French Quarter as both the original city of New Orleans and its shifting role as the city’s flagship neighborhood. Topics include, but are not limited to: architecture, historical preservation, colorful characters, the rise of tourism, literature and arts, drinking culture, crime and vice, and LGBT+ history.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will receive a Loyola University New Orleans Certificate of Completion and 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Have a familiarity with different types of tours.
Conduct in-depth research on New Orleans history by utilizing archival resources, interviews, field visits, and research facilities to gather and curate materials for compelling tour storytelling.
Develop and deliver engaging tour narratives by crafting tour scripts that balance historical accuracy with cultural insights and integrating research into stories that resonate with diverse audiences.
Master storytelling techniques by applying narrative structures and methods to create engaging, educational, and impactful stories for live audiences.
Reflect on the ethical dimensions of storytelling by evaluating the presentation of sensitive or contested historical topics to ensure respectful and balanced representation.
Collaborate with local historians, experts, seasoned tour guides, and peers to co-create accurate and engaging tour experiences.
Specialize in a New Orleans and/or Louisiana topic by developing a deep understanding of a specific historical or cultural theme to enhance tour narratives and expertise.
Connect research to practice by applying research findings to real-world tour contexts, presenting historically rich and culturally relevant stories.
